Your wedding hair timeline: when to book the trial and the big day

Wedding hair works best when you plan it backwards from the big day. The short version: book your stylist as soon as you have a date, do a trial about two to three months out, get any colour done roughly a week before, and build in plenty of time on the morning itself. Get that wedding hair timeline right and the day runs calmly. Leave it late and you’re chasing appointments in peak season with less room to change your mind. Here’s how it maps out.

Six to nine months out: lock in your stylist

Good bridal stylists book up fast, especially for weddings between October and March when half of Melbourne seems to be getting married on the same Saturday. As soon as you have a date and a venue, get your wedding-day booking confirmed. You don’t need every detail sorted yet. You just need your spot held.

If you’re getting your hair coloured, cut, or treated in the lead-up, it’s worth starting that relationship with the salon now too. A stylist who has seen your hair a few times before the wedding knows how it behaves, how it holds a curl, and what it does in humidity. That familiarity pays off on the day. Have a look at our wedding hair service to see what we offer and to get the conversation started early.

Three to four months out: start gathering ideas

This is the fun part. Start saving photos of styles you love and styles you don’t, because both help. Pin looks that suit your dress neckline, your hair length, and the overall feel of the day. A relaxed garden wedding and a black-tie ballroom call for different hair, and your stylist can guide you once they can see what you’re drawn to.

Be realistic about your hair’s length and thickness when you save inspiration. If a look needs far more hair than you have, your stylist will tell you, and there’s still time to discuss extensions to build length or volume for the day. Starting this early means any extensions can be matched and worn in a little before the wedding, so they feel natural.

Two to three months out: the trial

The trial is the single most useful appointment in the whole timeline, so don’t skip it. Booking it two to three months before the wedding gives you time to tweak the look, or change direction entirely, without any panic.

How to get the most from your trial

  • Come with your hair washed the day before, not the morning of. Day-old hair holds a style far better than squeaky-clean hair.
  • Bring photos of the looks you like, and a photo of your dress, especially the neckline and the back.
  • Bring your veil, hair comb, clips, or any accessory you plan to wear, so you can see how it sits.
  • Think about your makeup. If you’re having a makeup trial too, try to do them on the same day so you see the full picture.
  • Take photos at the end, from every angle, in natural light. What you love in the mirror you sometimes feel differently about on camera.

This is the moment to be honest and a little fussy. If something isn’t quite right, say so. It is far easier to adjust a style now than on the morning of the wedding with a room full of people waiting. A good stylist wants your feedback at the trial, not polite nods.

Hair up or hair down?

Trials are also where you settle the big question. Updos last brilliantly through a long day and keep your neck cool, which matters in an Australian summer. Soft waves and half-up styles look gorgeous but need the right preparation to hold for twelve hours of hugging, dancing, and photos. If you love the idea of hair down, your stylist may suggest a treatment or the right products beforehand so it stays put. Our updo styling covers the full range of formal looks.

The week before: colour, trims and final prep

If you colour your hair, time it for about a week before the wedding. That gives the colour a few washes to settle so it looks fresh but not brand new, and it leaves a buffer if anything needs adjusting. Booking colour the day before is cutting it fine, and there’s no room to fix a surprise.

Hold off on any brand-new treatment you haven’t tried before. The week of your wedding is not the time to test a new smoothing treatment, a dramatic cut, or a product your hair has never met. Stick with what you know works. If you want a gloss or toner to freshen things up, that’s lower risk, but talk it through with your colourist first. If you’re not sure about timing your colour, a quick colour consultation sorts it out.

A trim a week or two out keeps your ends looking sharp for photos. Nothing drastic, just a tidy.

On the wedding day: timing and order

Build in more time than you think you need. Hair and makeup almost always take longer on the day because there’s chatter, photos, a glass of something, and the general happy chaos of a wedding morning. A relaxed schedule is the difference between starting the day calm and starting it flustered.

If your bridal party is also getting their hair done, work out the running order in advance. A common approach is to do the bridesmaids and family first and the bride last, so your style is freshest for the ceremony. If you want photos of your finished hair before everyone rushes off, have the photographer arrive while there’s still a little calm. Let your stylist know how many people they’re styling and roughly when you need to leave, and they’ll build a schedule that works.

A simple morning checklist

  • Hair washed the day before, dry and brushed out before the stylist arrives or you arrive at the salon.
  • Veil, accessories and a photo of your trial look on hand.
  • A button-up or zip top so you don’t pull anything over your finished hair.
  • Water and a light snack for the bridal party so nobody fades.
  • A clear leave-by time shared with your stylist.

Don’t forget the rest of the party

Bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, and flower girls often want their hair done too, and that all takes time. Factor them into both your budget and your morning schedule early. We look after whole bridal parties, and we’ll talk through numbers and timing when you book so the morning isn’t a scramble.

Makeup is worth coordinating at the same time. Having hair and makeup handled together means one less supplier to chase and one less trip across town on the morning of the wedding.

FAQs

When should I do my bridal hair trial?

Two to three months before the wedding is the sweet spot. It’s close enough that your hair length and colour will be similar to the day, but with enough time to make changes or rethink the style without any stress. If you’re having a makeup trial, book both on the same day so you see the complete look.

How far in advance should I book wedding hair?

As soon as you have a date and venue, ideally six to nine months out. Bridal stylists get booked early, particularly for spring and summer weekends, so securing your spot first and sorting the details later is the safest approach.

Should I wash my hair before a wedding updo?

Yes, but the day before rather than the morning of. Day-old hair has a little natural grip that helps an updo hold and sit better. Freshly washed hair can be too soft and slippery to keep a style in place through a long day.

What should I bring to a hair trial?

Bring photos of styles you like, a picture of your dress (especially the neckline and back), and any accessories you plan to wear, such as a veil, comb or clips. Come with clean, day-old hair, and take photos from every angle at the end so you can review the look later.

How long does bridal hair take on the day?

A bride’s hair usually takes around an hour, sometimes longer for intricate updos or if extensions are involved. Each member of the bridal party adds time on top, so for a group it’s worth blocking out a generous window and building the schedule around your leave-by time.

Can you come to me, or do I come to the salon?

Arrangements vary, so the best thing is to ask when you enquire. Either way, we’ll talk through timing, the size of your party, and what works for your morning so the day runs smoothly.
